So, D23 took place over the weekend and what Disney or movie fan would I be if I didn't break some of my highlights down for y'all.
We of course got a lot of news regarding Marvel, Star Wars and everything in between -we got a lot of casting news from Disney's current live action movie slate and honestly these next couple of years are going to be great for Disney ($$$).
Live Action Aladdin
Let's start things off with one of the biggest bits of news from D23 – We have our Aladdin, Jasmine and Genie!!! For those of you who don't know we're getting a live action retelling of Aladdin… directed by Guy Ritchie (booooo!) the movie doesn't have a release date, I expect for it to be sometime around 2019. The movie has been in the press recently with claims that Disney were having major issues finding their Aladdin and the twitterverse went crazy thinking that they were going to cast someone not of arabic descent. This proved to not be the case first off we've got the big gun! Will Smith will be the genie, last seen on screen portrayed by Robin Williams (Smith has some big shoes to fill).
Live Action Dumbo
It was heavily rumored but now it's officially been announced – a live action Dumbo is coming, directed by Tim Burton the movie is set to premiere in early 2019. With an all star cast featuring Colin Farrel, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito and Eva Green; the movie is going to take a different turn than the classic plot wise, but it will be heavily influenced by the original. D23 attendees got a first glimpse of the elephant and hopes have been raised!
The Incredibles 2
13 years ago we met the Parr family (aka The Incredible) and both super hero and animation worlds were changed forever. Fans have cried out for a sequel since the credits rolled on the first and good news came from D23 – Incredibles 2 will pick up right after the first movie with no time passing. This leads to many fans speculating that The Underminer will be the villain. All the main cast are returning for the sequel bar the actor who play Dash who has obviously grew too old for the role. We got our first glimpse of the sequel in the form of concept art and some early footage.
Avengers – Infinity War
Disney gave us Marvel fans the best gift of all this weekend – our first glimpse of Infinity War. Set to be the biggest movie… well, ever! Infinity War is the accumulation of 10 years of a cinematic universe and I cannot wait. The public haven't seen the trailer yet, but the crowds were going wild and from what we've seen from the descriptions this movie is going to turn all comic book fans back into kids looking at the screen wide eyed with their jaws dropped.
A Wrinkle in Time
I for one know nothing about this book, but this trailer blew me away with breathtaking visuals and a killer cast – Disney's next big hit is here! Hardcore fans have been excited about this movie since it was announced a few years back. Ava DuVernay is directing this sci-fi blockbuster and it's clear it's going to be something really special.
Live Action Lion King
We got our release date (July 2019), we got the majority of our cast (Donald Glover, James Earl Jones, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner) – at D23 we got the first footage. Once again, not released to the public but it's been said that it wiped away all the fears that people had. Along with the footage more rumours emerged over the weekend, if things go well we'll Hugh Jackman as Scar and John Oliver as Zazu.
Mary Poppins Returns
Very little known about the sequel to the classic tale of Mary Poppins – we got our first really look at Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins and it's somewhat outstanding and I cannot wait until Christmas 2018.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
We got our first look at the most anticipated movie of the year just a few weeks back, but this behind the scenes video offers us so much more. As a fan I wanted to stay as far away from this as possible because I want to go into this movie totally blind. For the purposes of this post though, I guess I'll have to watch.
Okay, wow. This is something special. Offering us very little story wise (thank god) we got a huge look at the world we're going to be seeing. I am so damn excited, this footage does what it's meant to do – it shows us what Rian Johnson has been doing with the franchise and gets us excited. The highlight of the footage for me was definitely Carrie Fisher saying one line "It's about family and that's what is so powerful about it". I am not ready for this movie.
So, that's my highlights – Disney also dropped their entire release schedule until 2019.
